We have been involved with the ground workers apprenticeship scheme for over five years. Since we were first involved, the scheme has significantly evolved. Our involvement began alongside Anglian Water Services, where the apprenticeship scheme was aimed at giving young people an opportunity to join the industry with opportunities in many different disciplines. Today, the content of the course has progressed significantly, by introducing them to further skills as well as potential future workplaces.
Callum wanted to become an apprentice so that he can learn life and work skills whilst earning a wage. He wanted to be active and at work rather than being at home during the day.
Callum says enjoys being an apprentice as he is learning new skills daily. Whilst he is largely based out on site, in his early months with the business he was able to spend some time within the office environment learning and understanding how the business operates in other areas. This has been a valuable insight which also helps with his understanding of on-site activity.
In his free time, Callum enjoys spending time with his mates where they go to the pub. Callum also enjoys motor sports including the moto GP!
Liam discovered the opportunity of the apprenticeship scheme whilst at college and felt that it looked like a good opportunity with as big company/alliance and the chance of a career in a ‘job for life’.
Liam says he particularly enjoys being a part of the team. He also says that the work itself is rewarding and enjoyable, meaning inevitably working with a good and experienced team, he has learned a lot.
Outside of work Liam enjoys watching football as a Chelsea supporter, going to the pub with his mates and playing pool and fussball.
Reece wanted to undertake the apprenticeship as he was interested by the type of work and wanted to find out more.
Reece says he has enjoyed his first five months and whilst he has been covering similar work on large schemes, this has given him the chance to really learn, in-depth, what he is doing and gaining experience with these tasks and is looking forward to learning new skills and looking at different types of schemes/projects going forward.
Outside of work, Reece enjoys both watching and playing football. He plays for a team that was set up by himself and some friends and enjoys following Ipswich Town through the good and bad times!
Dylan was compelled to join the apprenticeship as he loves being outside and wanted to try something new. With a connection to this industry, his father, who is a project manager for Claret, it was something he wanted to try.
Dylan says he enjoys the apprenticeship, particularly as every day is different and with new challenges. He will give anything a go. There is a lot to learn, however, this aspect is also enjoyable to Dylan.
Outside of work Dylan likes football and is an Arsenal supporter. He likes to spend time with friends where he plays pool and is also in a snooker league.
Riley’s father works for Claret and discussed a career in our industry with Riley and this was something that he was interested in trying.
Riley says enjoys working with the site teams and whilst doing this, is often told some nice stories about his father when he has been working with them. He enjoys the mix of work and the different aspects that Claret are involved with.
Outside of work, Riley enjoys playing XBOX with his friends. He enjoys driving and will often go out for a drive with his mates. Additionally, he enjoys fishing with his father.
Tyler chose this course because he thought it would be interesting and along the same lines of previous experience.
Tyler says he particularly enjoys the different types of things that we do, including inspecting and entering manholes. He also says he really enjoys working as part of a team.
Outside of work Tyler enjoys both playing and watching sports, including football, as a Norwich supporter and cricket. He also enjoys going to the pub with friends.
In January 2021, Jason joined us and is now close to completing his apprenticeship, where he will be looking to secure a full-time position with us. In January 2022, a further three apprentices joined us, Liam, Callum and Thomas where they were assigned mentors, who are enjoying going through the coursework and site work with them. Two of these apprentices are well on their way to a career within our industry. Finally, due to our continued success with the process, we chose to bring a further four apprentices into the business in September 2022, Riley, Dylan, Reece and Tyler are all progressing well.

Since we were first involved in the ground workers apprenticeship scheme, it has significantly evolved. Our involvement began alongside Anglian Water Services where there was only one college involved, the College of West Anglia, Wisbech Campus. The apprenticeship scheme was aimed at giving young people an opportunity to join the industry with opportunities in many different disciplines.
The course consisted of an initial year as a student spent at the college, and if successful in their coursework and assessment day involving group activities and interviews, they would progress into two subsequent years as an apprentice where they would be within our operational teams. Whilst undertaking this work, the apprentices would complete coursework leading to the submission of their final portfolio. At this point, they would potentially be offered a job within the organisation.
In 2017 - 2020 we had our first cohort of four apprentices join us at Claret. We were also involved with the progress of other apprentices based within other Anglian Water Services partner organisations. Three of our initial apprentices successfully completed the apprenticeship in 2020 and two of these joined us at Claret as full-time employees, where they continue to progress today. Additionally, one of the other apprentices who was based elsewhere had been working with us during their apprenticeship and on successful completion, they confirmed that they too have joined the Claret team and continue to thrive daily, looking for the next opportunity of progression.
From 2021 onwards, the programme changed for the next cohort of apprentices. There are now four colleges involved, the College of West Anglia – Wisbech Campus, West Suffolk College (Bury St Edmunds), Grimsby Institute & Milton Keynes College. The content of the course has now progressed, as has the process of introducing them to their potential future workplaces.
We continue to enhanced the number of visits to the colleges to meet the students and offer practical days of learning bringing equipment and people from within our workforce to meet them. The apprentices were introduced to CCTV, GPR, Lining, Cutting, Pipes & Fittings, Plant as well as an introduction to health and safety.

This inspirational and exciting programme is well needed to ensure that we create a depth of workforce resilience at the same time as offering incredible career opportunities for the candidates. It is also a fundamental part of our future and we look forward to progressing this programme further over the coming years.
Additionally, we have recently been bringing employees in through other apprenticeship programmes. This is how we have now begun the process of bringing in students from West Suffolk College on work experience for T-Level Courses.
